It has yearly revenues of approx 9 billion dollars. The purpose was to acquire and operate Bell Canada services in the province, which were poorly executed and falling short on demands from the growing settlements and which Bell was neglecting in favor of other priorities. After many company name changes due to acquisitions and restructuring events, the current day TELUS was officially formed as recently as 1999.

TELUS uses the CDMA 2000 protocol and markets its 3G EV-DO as "broadband on the fly". In a hotly contended bidding war in 2004, TELUS bid $1.1 billion for Microcell Technologies, the owner of FIDO which was a GSM based network. TELUS lost out to Rogers, who are a fellow Canadian communication firms.TELUS places a big focus on offerings its customer's leading edge entertainment features. They were one of the first networks to embrace media rich phones such as camera and mp3 functionality.

On the prepaid, pay as you go front TELUS has been on the bleeding edge- they have launched a prepaid games arcade which they market to their customer base. TELUS sell prepaid game cards which allow users to have access to over 500 games of all genres across all age groups via there "play pack card" and "arcade pack card" products.

TELUS brand there prepaid mobile plans as "Pay and Talk" while other providers use the key words prepaid or pay as you go. TELUS has a beautiful design and branding campaign. Since 1999 it has made use of exotic brightly colored animals to market its innovative and unique product offerings. It continues this theme to create unique pay and talk campaigns targeted to customers who use less than 100 minutes per month. Included in its prepaid packages are voicemail, conference calling, do not disturb, and in the digital service areas call waiting and display. In 2007 TELUS took a bold step by deciding to allow their wireless users to be able to download pornography from their servers. By doing so, TELUS became the first national carrier in North America to take such a step. The decision was made after TELUS undertook an extensive research campaign as to what its customers were searching for using their mobile device. The backlash from numerous conservative groups was fast and TELUS decided to switch off the offering.
